Berlin Student Saved From Choking

8 January 2019 News

A fifth-grade student at Clay Lamberton Elementary School in Berlin was saved from choking to death during a recent lunch period by a fellow classmate and lunchroom aide. Ben couldn’t talk or breathe and grabbed the arm of classmate Chad Halbesma who managed to get some of the food out Ben was choking on by performing back blows between Ben’s shoulder blades. But he was still unable to breathe and Chad and another student Rowan Hanson ran to the aide Amanda Osterberg. She too provided back blows, but this time the food expelled and Ben was able to breathe again. School nurse Terri Mauel says it was a serious situation and the entire lunchroom came to a halt. She says when Ben could breathe again everyone began to cheer and clap for Osterberg, Chad and Rowan. Berlin School District Superintendent Dr. Bob Eidahl says they are proud of the quick-thinking action of all involved.
