FDL County Board Approves Borrowing For Capital Improvement Projects

Fond du Lac County supervisors last night unanimously approved borrowing $27.5 million for the capital improvement projects the County will be doing over the next three years. Among the planned projects are roof repairs for County-owned buildings, highway projects, remodeling projects and the replacement of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system for the Portland Street Annex.

FDL County Health Department Seeking Accreditation

Over the next year the Fond du Lac County Health Department will be seeking accreditation. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says across the country health departments have to meet a minimum set of standards. She says accreditation means setting the bar for those standards higher. “So what we want to do is we want to take it up many notches and we want to try and meet the highest standard possible so that means we need to look at all of our programs and make sure we are not just reaching the minimum we are reaching it at the highest standard.” She points out it comes down to how they are serving the public and how they can do that better. Mueller says they are following best practices and quality improvement standards. Mueller gave a presentation on the accreditation effort to the County Board last night.

Drive Sober

Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner is asking people to plan ahead if they are going to holiday parties where alcohol will be consumed. Ripon Police and other law enforcement agencies across Fond du Lac County are participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that runs through New Year’s Day. Wallner says there are plenty of alternatives to getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking. “During the holiday time period people are out celebrating and involved in extra activity so it is nice for us to pay attention to those impaired drivers, offer some suggestions to those people that are out celebrating and really it is about making out roadways safe for everybody in our community and throughout the County and throughout the state of Wisconsin.” Among the options drivers have is choosing a designated driver, taking a cab home or participating in the “Safe Ride” program some restaurants and bars are affiliated with.

A 30-year-old Marshall man has been sentenced to a year in jail and three years’ probation for driving the getaway car in a theft at the Beaver Dam Menards. In October Lucas Thruman pleaded no contest to one count of felony retail theft. His accomplice, 29-year-old David Seely also of Marshall, will be sentenced on January 29th on felony retail theft charges. Seely left the Menards‘ store last April with a cart that contained about $2,000 dollars’ worth of tools. Thruman waited in a car for him. Witnesses told police that Seely had what looked like a Taser gun and told them to back away.

Habitat And United Way Partnership Makes Things Happen

The executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Fond du Lac County says donations to the Ripon Area United Way help to fund efforts they are doing in the area. Katie Karls says they have two lots they can build on in Ripon, but it takes funding to pursue those type of building projects so donations help set those things in motion. “We so much would like to get the steering committee back here for another Ripon Build, of course it is much bigger than Habitat. It is the Ripon community coming together with partnership of the United Way.” Karls says they will be doing some home improvements in Ripon next summer and will also sponsor a women’s workshop.
