Celebrating Hanukkah

While most of us prepare for the celebration of Christmas, those of the Jewish faith are celebrating Hanukkah which began last Sunday and runs through this Monday. Elijah Israel of Ripon reminded us of that. He listens to our stations, but wanted to make sure we remembered people of different faiths celebrate different holidays. Hanukkah also known as the Festival of Lights is traced back to the taking back of a temple and the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem following a revolt. In particular it had to do with the lighting of the Menorah. “They wanted to relight the temple as they were building it. So they took the Menorah and they only had a little bit of oil that would last them a little bit of time, but it lasted for eight days.” Israel, who is 66-years-old, changed his name when he converted to the Jewish faith. He says there are plenty of Christmas songs, but very few except for humorous songs about Hanukkah.
