Oshkosh Fire Department is urging residents to be alert when they are cooking on a stove following a kitchen fire Thursday morning at a duplex in the 200 block of High Avenue. Food was left unattended on a stove. Five children and three adults escaped the fire and were being assisted by the Red Cross. Fire department officials pleaded on Facebook, “Please, please, please if you decide to cook something on the stove make sure you are alert enough to do so.” The only working smoke detector was in the basement and was chirping due to a low battery. The fire was less than a block away for another recent unattended cooking fire. The time of the fire call was 2:45 am.
