Drive Sober Continues This Weekend
Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner says they have good cooperation in the area with taverns and restaurants who are looking out for their patrons welfare when it comes to drinking and driving. He says if someone’s too drunk to drive they will usually make calls for taxi cabs or someone to come and pick them up. “A lot of those businesses to are aware, they care about their customers and they don’t want to see anything bad happen as well. So they will make those phone calls for you if you think you need to have those calls made.” Wallner notes last year in Wisconsin alcohol-related crashes resulted in about 170 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the state, including City of Ripon and Town of Ripon Police, are participating in the “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over” campaign that runs through New Year’s Day.
Berlin Alderperson Vacancy
The City of Berlin is taking applications for the soon-to-be open seat for the 5th Ward alderperson spot on the Common Council. Alderperson Terry Przybyl’s resignation takes effect Monday. She is moving out of the city limits and consequently out of the 5th Ward. Applications for the seat can be obtained from the city clerk’s office. Applications and resumes need to be returned by next Friday. The Common Council will consider those returned by the deadline.
Social Security Scam
Scammers are using a phone number that spoofs the Social Security Administration. Jerad Albracht of the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) says scammers will bait you into giving personal information or your numbers by saying it is needed to increase your benefits or because there has been a problem with your numbers. He says people fall for it because the number that comes up on their caller ID actually spoofs the Social Security Administration’s real number. “On the caller ID the number will spoof to show the actual Social Security Administration 1-800 number. It actually ends its 1-800 and then there are some digits and then it is 1213. So if you ever see that come up on your caller ID you know you have a scammer on the line.” He says the best thing to do is hang up, but if you want to report it call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. You can also contact DATCP. The real Social Security Administration wouldn’t call you, they would contact you through the mail.
Berlin Winter Parking Restrictions Suspended During The Holidays
Berlin Police gave residents an early Christmas gift by suspending the winter parking restrictions starting last Friday. But it’s a limited time offer and it will end on January 2nd. There was a proviso that if there was measurable snow that required snowplows to be out, then the winter parking would be reinstated. All other parking ordinances remain in effect and will be enforced.
