A Year Of Heavy Lifting

The Ripon Area School Board recently approved a contract and a parent and student handbook for the Odyssey Academy of Virtual Learning. A $900,000 state grant is being used to plan and implement the charter school. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says it’s going to be a year of heavy lifting to prepare for the school’s opening next fall. “Right now we’re spending a lot of time putting our documents together, creating our website, our enrollment process and our marketing campaign to make sure families in Wisconsin know we exist.” She says unlike the other virtual schools that already exist in the state, this one will have a strong connection to parents and a lot of interaction with parents about the instruction of their children. She says the target number for the 4K through 12th grade school is 320 students, but they can open with as few as 40. Like the district’s four other charter schools the academy will have project-based learning.
