Kimberly Clark Bill May Not Have Enough Support

The minority leader in the Wisconsin State Senate doesn’t believe Republicans have enough votes to pass an incentive package to keep Kimberly Clark from closing a plant in Neenah. Senator Jennifer Shilling says there may not be enough support in the Republican-controlled Senate to keep 500 workers from losing their job. “I have not had any contact with Senator (Roger) Roth or Senator (Scott) Fitzgerald to talk about where they are at with the vote. It is my understanding that their caucus does not have the votes right now to pass this.” The Joint Finance Committee will hold a public hearing at the State Capitol today on the bill. A special session has been called for after Thanksgiving to take a vote on the bill. Shilling says there are a lot of state residents who don’t support a bail out situation similar to what was done for Foxconn.

Schools Can Always Use Volunteers

Ripon Area Schools Superintendent Mary Whitrock says there are plenty of volunteer opportunities within their schools. In addition to volunteers Whitrock says they are always on the lookout for substitute teachers. “We’re always looking for substitute teachers as well so if they want to get more involved we certainly are going to open our doors and welcome them in.” There are also mentoring opportunities. Whitrock says people who want to mentor with students simply need to call the High School or Middle School to get more information. At one time Whitrock was part of a radio show called “A Call for Volunteers.” She says as a volunteer you make a difference for the person that you are volunteering and working with, but the gains that you get personally typically are much greater than what you give.

Colorado Man Convicted In Dodge County Injury Accident

A 28-year-old Colorado man will be sentenced next February for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in Dodge County and injuring two passengers in the process. Monday Steven Cummings pleaded no contest to injury by use of a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance. Another charge was read into the record and dismissed. The accident in the Town of Lebanon happened in August of last year when Cummings failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road striking a utility pole. Both passengers were seriously injured and one was flown from the scene with life-threatening injuries. A blood test found both marijuana and alcohol in Cummings’s system. The sentencing is scheduled for February 14th.

Child Gets Stuck In Handcuffs

A Town of Fox Lake child’s curiosity led to a call to the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department last weekend. Sheriff’s officials say a five-year-old found an old pair of handcuffs and got stuck in them. The child’s mother called authorities. She wasn’t able to find the keys to the handcuffs. A deputy was able to remove the cuffs and disposed of them.

Two Fox Valley Area Salvage Yards Being Shut Down

Two Fox Valley area salvage yards have been ordered to close by the end of the year due to their fraudulent activities. The salvage dealer licenses of Gibson Iron Metal and Auto, Inc. in Neenah and Fox Valley Iron Metal & Auto Salvage, Inc. of Oshkosh were revoked. A state official issued the order revoking them. Meanwhile a judge has ordered the two dealerships to cease purchasing scrap motor vehicles, but will allow a wind-down period for the companies, which have approximately 50 employees. The two companies have until the end of the year to sell, process or recycle auto bodies and parts from motor vehicles they already own.
