Opposition Already Expressed Over Governor Elects Authority
Governor-elect Tony Evers is going to encounter opposition from legislative Republicans. State Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling says its unfortunate that Evers isn’t even in office yet and Republicans are already trying to weaken his powers. “It was disheartening within less than a day Governor Evers being elected that Speaker Vos was talking about was very defiant about undermining the powers the incoming Governor.” Shilling says Democrats will be working on some of the same things they talked about on the campaign trail including supporting and funding public schools, finding a long term solution to our transportation funding, affordable health care and protecting those who have preexisting conditions.
Dodge County Budget Approved
Dodge County supervisors this week approved the County’s 2019 budget and a tax levy of $34 million. The mill rate for the $112 million budget will be $5.40 per thousand dollars of value on a property, roughly a 10 cent decrease from the past year. Property tax bills will be going out next month. This year’s County budget saw an increase of about $200,000.
Majority Of Public School Districts Meet DPI Report Card Expectations
The state’s Department of Public Instruction says over 96 percent of the 422 public school districts in Wisconsin met expectations on their annual reports cards. That’s up a percent from last year. Among the area school districts met expectations were Berlin, Waupun and Wautoma. Districts exceeding expectations include Green Lake, Rosendale-Brandon, Oshkosh and Ripon. Districts significantly exceeding expectations included Markesan and Oakfield. District report cards can be viewed at the DPI website.
United Way Dinner And Trivia Night A Success
Last week’s dinner and trivia contest were a success for the Ripon Area United Way. United Way Board of Directors President Jeff Puhlman-Becker says nearly 160 people attended the event at Ripon College’s Great Hall. “158 people there we raised a little over $10,000 toward our $90,000 goal and it was a lot of fun. We had people saying I hope you do it again next year.” He says they had a professional run the trivia contest and he did a great job. The winner of the trivia contest, a team of eight, won a half-barrel keg party from Knuth Brewing. The United Way campaign benefits 21 agencies that provide services in the area.
Weather Radios
Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says a weather radio is a nice resource to have any time of year and something to consider if you are looking for a Christmas gift giving idea. She says they won’t be going off during the winter like they do during the summer when a watch or warning is issued. “You are not going to get the winter weather warning on the weather radio so you don’t have to worry about getting woken up in the middle of the night.” Still Hicken says you can still track the weather during a winter storm and it would still help you make decisions such as how long you should avoid going outside during a storm.
