Waupun Schools Budget Approved
The Waupun Area School Board this week adopted the District’s 2018-19 budget. The $23.1 million budget includes a $9.9-million tax levy, which is an increase of just over $260,000. District Superintendent Steven Hill says the mill rate will drop nine cents to $9.68 per thousand dollars of value on a property. The district is heading into its final year of a $36 million referendum passed by voters in November of 2016.
Health Officer Urges Getting Flu Shot Now
Fond du Lac County’s Public Health Officer recommends getting a flu shot as part of your holiday preparations. Holiday gatherings put you into contact with a variety of people, some of whom could be carrying the flu virus or could be susceptible to it. Kim Mueller says it’s better to get the vaccine now. “Now when you get it you’re protecting yourself again for that whole season so if you get it now before you have that chance of getting sick you have less of a chance of getting that sickness and then again passing it along from person-to-person.” Mueller says it takes about two weeks after you get the shot to build up full immunity so factor that in before you have have those big family gatherings during the holidays. In addition to the County Health Department flu shots are available through health care providers, pharmacies and many stores.
Berlin Area School District Receives Teacher Training Grant
The Berlin Area School District has been awarded a $45,000 state grant to help teachers who are working to get reading specialist licenses, finish special education programs and to teach Technical Education dual credit courses. Berlin School District 6-12 Director of Instruction Jodi Becker says they are very excited to be able to support teachers who want to increase their knowledge and skills. The grant will be used for teachers at all three District Schools; Clay Lamberton Elementary, Berlin Middle School and Berlin High School. The state’s Department of Workforce Development awarded the Fast Forward grant.
Gingerbread House Contestants Wanted
The planning committee for Ripon’s Dickens of a Christmas celebration has put out a call for bakers for the Gingerbread House Contest. There will be two categories; children 14 and under; and an adult/family category. One prize will be awarded in the adult/family category with 1st place receiving a $150 cash prize. The children’s winner will be awarded $50. All entries along with a $10 entry fee must be delivered to Farrell’s Fine Furnishings at 214 Watson Street by 7 pm on Thursday December 6th. FDL Area United Way Fundraiser
The Fond du Lac County Employees United Way Commitee will be holding a vendor’s fair at the City-County Government Center today. It will be on the first floor in Rooms F, G & H from 10 am to 2 pm with a soup luncheon from 11 am until 1 pm. Participating vendors will include Jean’s Crafts; Gourmet Cupboard; Mary Kay; Norwex; Pampered Chef; Scentsy; Sue’s Homemade Canned Goods; and Tupperware. Faris’ Popcorn order forms will also be available, with delivery the week of November 19th. The fundraiser will benefit the Fond du Lac Area United Way.
