Incumbent Attorney General Brad Schimel has conceded the race to his Democratic challenger Josh Kaul. Schimel, a Republican, announced Monday he won’t seek a recount, even though by state law he is entitled to one because he lost the election by less than one percentage point. Kaul defeated Schimel by over 17,000 votes. Kaul is the first Democratic Attorney General since his mother, Peg Lautenschlager, who served in that post from 2002 to 2006. In a statement Schimel called the voting gap in the race “definitive” and didn’t believe enough votes could be found to make up the difference. He also didn’t want to put county clerks, their staff, and the public through the ordeal of a recount.
