FDL County Hopes To See Autopsy Revenues Pick Up

Fond du Lac County will be building up the revenue from its Medical Examiner’s Office over the coming years. At one time about a dozen other counties contracted with the County to have the county perform autopsies for them. But the County lost much of that business when Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Douglas Kelley left to take a job with Milwaukee County. Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel told county supervisors Thursday night that Milwaukee County ended up getting much of that business as a result. He says with the addition of Chief Medical Examiner Adam Covach some of those counties are returning to have Fond du Lac County perform their autopsies. He notes Kelley did 440 autopsies in his last year with the county, which was too much. He says Covach will be performing about 285 autopsies with about 200 of those from other counties.

The Waupun Police Department and Dodge County Emergency Management will be holding a “Situational Awareness for Workplace Violence and Active Threats” training program Wednesday at the Waupun High School. You know you have your Hide, Run, Fight concept. That will be some of the things were will be talking about in the training for these businesses.” Louden says the tragic shooting at a bar and restaurant in Thousand Oaks, California where 12 people were killed and the shooter are a reminder that will can’t take for granted being safe when we are out in the public. Ice Storms Most Dangerous

The Communications and Emergency Management Director for Fond du Lac County says of the different types of winters storms probably the most dangerous they have to deal with is an ice storm. “Those are the worst in my opinion types of storms that we can have because of the power outage and the need for heat and every thing so those are definitely a concern.” Bobbi Hicken says those types of storms keep people inside, which is why you should have a winter supply kit that will sustain you for several days. She says you have to be prepared and aware of what is going on and make good decisions. This past week was Winter Awareness Week.

Poll Workers Needed

If you’re looking for another way to do your civic duty there is always a need for workers at election polling sites. Ripon City Clerk Ann Schommer says the workers they had helping people out during last Tuesday’s General Election worked a very long day because they are shorthanded. “On average they work about 17 hours for an election of this type where there is going to be a heavy turnout.” There is training involved and generally there are two elections a year. But Schommer says with the General Election this past fall and the spring election there were a total of four elections including primary elections. Anyone who might be interested in working at the polls during elections should contact Schommer or their municipal clerk.

Traffic Incident Response Week

Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed this week as Traffic Incident Response Week. The state’s Department of Transportation will be joining other organizations in a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the important, dangerous job of crash response. In the last five years, Wisconsin averaged more than 125,000 traffic crashes annually. DOT Secretary Dave Ross says first responders risk their lives to respond to highway incidents. He is asking that drivers do their part to ensure those responders can do their job and get home safe. Between 2013 and 2017, more than 242 crashes annually involved at least one emergency vehicle engaged in an emergency response.
