Methamphetamine Awareness Day
Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb says methamphetamine never went away as a drug problem in Wisconsin, but it’s use is increasing. Lamb says they saw a marked increase in its availability in the state from 2011 to 2016. “The last five, six, seven years the presence of meth, it’s availability in Wisconsin has absolutely skyrocketed. Some statistics suggest statewide as much as 250 percent greater over the course of that span in throughout the state of Wisconsin.” Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed today Methamphetamine Awareness Day is the state. Lamb says as part of that they are encouraging people to talk to their children, friends and family members about the risks and dangers of meth use. Lamb says meth is just as deadly as heroin even though the frequency of overdoses isn’t as great.
Princeton Man Sentenced For Tenth Drunken Driving Offense
A 40-year-old Princeton man was sentenced this week to five years in prison and five years of extended supervision for his tenth drunken driving offense, which included fleeing from Green Lake County Sheriff’s deputies. Last February deputies stopped Jeremy Kirst on State Highway 23 in the Town of Brooklyn, but when the deputy tried to make face-to-face contact with him Kirst fled at speeds up to 85 miles an hour through farm fields and marshland. He ended up striking an embankment, which sent his vehicle flipping end-over-end into a ditch. He and his dog then fled on foot into a marsh. He was tracked to an excavating company where he stole a vehicle. Eventually he was arrested at a residence in Waushara County.
Tornado Sirens Go Off In FDL
Tornado sires sounded in Fond du Lac Wednesday evening shortly before 6 pm, but there was no threat to the public. Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says they were testing pagers, which activated the sirens in the city. She says they are upgrading the siren system and a problem with the programming may have lead to the sirens sounding.
Shipping Scams
With millions of packages being shipped and received over the Christmas season it is prime time for scammers using shipping scams. Jerald Albracht is with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. He says if you receive a text or email advising you there is a problem with your order don’t go to the link they provide or open an attachment. “It’s a good time for scammers to sneak these in. What you will see is is you will see fake shipping emails that claim to come from the major companies like Fedex, or DHL or the U.S. Postal Service.” He says you are safer going back to the website of the retailer you ordered from to check on the progress of your shipment. He says another clue is to look at the URL of the person who sent you the email and if doesn’t match the company you ordered from it is a scam.
