Man Accused Of Delivering Fatal Blow Refuses To Attend Court Hearing

The 34-year-old Kaukauna man suspected of delivering a fatal blow to an Oshkosh man refused to appear in Winnebago County court for his preliminary hearing Monday. Christopher Barry is charged with aggravated battery in death of 47-year-old Steven Mallas who he punched in the jaw over $18 taken in a bar. Mallas suffered a broken jaw and complications from that led to his death five days later. The incident happened on a sidewalk outside the bar. A status conference is scheduled in the case tomorrow.

Arraignment Coming Up For Man Who Fled the Law In A Plane

A preliminary reports has been released on the August 31st plane crash in Waupaca County involving a Neenah man fleeing from the law. Andrei Biesinger nearly hit an Oshkosh Police squad car when he took off without clearance from Wittman Regional Airport. The 47-year-old was wanted on domestic-abuse related charges. According to the National Transportation Safety Board report Biesinger suffered serious injuries when he crashed the plane in a Waupaca County cornfield. He’s charged with two counts of second degree recklessly endangering safety and will be arraigned on those charges in Winnebago County court next Monday.

FDL County Board Approves New Chief Medical Examiner

Fond du Lac County Supervisors last night approved a new Chief Medical Examiner for the County. Adam Covach is a Fond du Lac native who grew up in Winneconne. He did his residency at the UW and his fellowship was completed in July in Michigan. County Executive Al Buechel is confident Covach has the experience needed to run the office. “He’s fully prepared for it and the experienced he has garnered in the last few months since he arrived here in August has helped him develop the confidence that he can do this job.” Chief Medical Examiner Douglas Kelley left to take a job with Milwaukee County’s Office. Two others Fond du Lac County considered for the position did not work out.

State Highway 116 In Winneconne Reopens

The state’s Department of Transportation tells us State Highway 116 or Main Street in downtown Winneconne will reopen to traffic today. The road has been closed and detoured since April 2nd for urban reconstruction from 2nd Street to 9th Street on the west side of Winneconne, and from 2nd Avenue to 13th Avenue on the east side of the city. The $5.9 million project finished on time and on budget. A separate project to replace the Wolf River Bridge will continue in 2019 with removal of the former bridge and construction of fishing platforms.

Trick Or Treat Hours

Many communities held trick or treating hours over the weekend, but there are still quite a few sticking to actually holding them on Halloween. Among them this evening are Fox Crossing, Omro and Winneconne from 4 to 7 pm. Brandon has their hours from 4:30 to 6:30 tonight. Trick or Treating in Oshkosh is from 5 to 7 pm and in Rosendale from 5:30 to 7 pm.
