Waupun Backing Elimination Of Dark Store Loophole
Waupun has joined the growing number of cities and counties backing a statewide initiative to eliminate the “Dark Store” tax loophole big businesses are using to have their property tax bills lowered. Through the loophole the businesses are assessed as if they were closed giving them a big break on assessments. The Waupun Common Council this week approved a resolution supporting the initiative, which 44 other cities have backed. The Green Lake County Board in August went a step further voting to put an advisory referendum on the November ballot asking state legislators to do away with the loophole. The loophole ends up shifting the tax burden to other property owners.

Fire Safety Education
As Fire Prevention week comes to a close a local fire chief says it’s never to early or to late in life to learn how to be fire safe. Waupun Fire Chief B.J. DeMaa says they educate kids from 3K to 5th Grade about fire safety. He says it’s amazing how much information even the youngest kids retain. He says, “It’s amazing starting with the 3K group by the time they are in kindergarten, first grade the amount of knowledge and information they are able to retain. They are pretty quick to be able to answer the questions that we ask them.” He recommends looking around your home to find possible fire hazards and always have two ways out in case of a fire. The theme of Fire Prevention Week is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware, Fire can happen anywhere.” More tips are available at the National Fire Protection Association website.
