New Lighting Requirements For Amish Buggies
3 October 2018 News
A grace period for Amish communities in Wisconsin to make lighting changes on their horse and buggies to comply with a new law is nearly up. Green Lake County Chief Deputy Mark Putzke says enforcement of the new law begins Friday, but they tried to get the word out on it in plenty of time for the Amish to make the necessary changes. He says, “I know that Green Lake, Marquette, Columbia County all went together and tried to get that information out to our shared Amish community in the southwest corner of our particular county to get them all on board.” Amish buggies must have at least one white headlight, two lighted red lights in the rear, and a amber strobe light all visible from 500 feet. Putzke says we’ve had some tragedies in the state involving Amish buggies and the changes are meant to make our roadways safer.
