Warrant Issued For Menasha Man For Death Of His Infant Son In A Fire

An arrest warrant was issued for a 29-year-old Menasha man whose 18-month-old son died after an apartment building fire. Vernon Williams has been charged in Winnebago County with neglecting a child with the consequence being death. The fire happened on September 6th at an apartment building in the 100 block of First Street in Menasha. The baby boy was taken to a hospital and later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee where he died four days later. Twelve other people in the five-unit apartment building safely escaped, but the child did not. Firefighters pulled him out of the building. A child playing with a cigarette lighter started the fire.

Parking Restriction Lifted For Alliance Laundry Systems Employees

The Ripon Common Council this week voted unanimously to remove a parking restriction for Alliance Laundry Systems employees on Hall Street from Spaulding to Tygert. Five residents living in the area signed a petition for the change. But Council members went one better also lifting the parking restrictions from Tygert to Eureka. Mayor Gary Will says the staff recommended it to avoid leaving an island in the parking district. He says, “By just doing the one block where the petition is and the five that signed it that live on that block, there is only one block left to the west of there that is in this district on that street.” One of the petitioners, Jeanne Payton told the Council there have been no parking issues in front of her home.

Carbon Monoxide Levels Force Plant Evacuation In Portage

Several workers at a food plant in Portage had to be taken to a hospital after carbon monoxide reached dangerous levels at the facility Wednesday. The Dawn’s Fresh Foods plant was evacuated as levels peaked at more than 200 times the normal level. A person discovered the problem and quickly got everyone outside. There’s speculation a water heater may have caused the issue. Dawn’s Fresh Foods makes potato salad and other refrigerated deli salad products.

Grothman Impressed With States Prison Transition Programs

Congressman Glenn Grothman is impressed with some of the programs our state prisons are using to transition inmates back into the workforce. Grothman recently toured a few of the prisons. A recent state law allows eligible inmates to return to their home counties before their release and do work-release programs through their county jails essentially allowing them to work until their release. Grothman was also impressed with the welding courses Fox Lake and Kettle Moraine Correctional are using, which teaches the inmates the skills to get good paying welding jobs when they are released from prison. He says one of the welding instructors at Kettle Moraine told some of those inmates were making $17 to $20 an hour after their release.

Smoke Detectors Give You Time To Escape From Fire

Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says if there is one message he would like to pass along this National Fire Prevention Week it is that working smoke detectors can save lives. He points out that it only takes a matter of minutes for a fire to get out of control in a home and smoke detectors could give you the time you need to escape. He says, “Fires these days triple in size every minute where they used to double in size they triple in size every minute. They burn hotter and faster and the average time you have to get out of a home is three minutes if you don’t have a smoke detector the outcome is going to be catastrophic for you or your family.” Saul says a month-and-a-half to two months ago there was a fire in Ripon where the smoke detectors weren’t working and the person was upstairs so they are fortunate that fire didn’t end tragically.

We don’t know who won $1 million in Tuesday’s Mega Millions drawing, but we do know where they purchased their ticket in Fond du Lac. It was at the Pick ‘n Save Store at 760 West Johnson Street. The winner had five of the numbers in the drawing, but not the Mega Ball. That person has up to six months to claim their prize. The estimated jackpot for tonight’s drawing is more than $550 million with a one-time payout option of over $310 million.

Utility Scam

The state’s director of the bureau of consumer protection says as we get into the heating season scammers ramp up the old utility scam. Michele Reinen works for the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. She says posing as a representative of a utility they will call and threaten to shut off your heat if you don’t immediately send them a payment. But she says that’s not the way real light and power companies work. (She says, “And now that the weather is turning cool people might be getting nervous about that. That also is not the way utility companies collect on delinquent payments.” Reinen says real utility companies contact you in writing and allow payment plans. She says they don’t send out trucks to disconnect you if you refuse that phone call.
