Baby Rescued From Menasha Apartment Fire Dies

Authorities say an 18-month-old baby boy rescued from an apartment fire in Menasha last week has died. The baby died at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa. Neenah-Menasha firefighters says the apartment at at 127 First Street is uninhabitable after last Thursday’s blaze. A dozen people were in the apartment at the time of the fire. Firefighters pulled four of them out of there including the toddler. An older child playing with a cigarette lighter is believed to have caused the fire.

Standoff In Neenah Started From Shot Fired Call

Police in Neenah say a struggle between a 30-year-old man and 18-year-old man led to a shot being fired and a standoff Monday afternoon. It happened in the 600 block of Main Street after a call about a gun being fired at a person. Investigators learned from witnesses the older man had pointed the gun at the teen, which led to a struggle and the gun going off. Police arrested one of the men who is facing multiple charges including endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, being armed while under the influence of intoxicants and disorderly conduct.

Needle Tipped Nerf Darts Lead To Charges For Columbia County Man

Prosecutors in Columbia County have charged a 33-year-old Town of Lewiston man who allegedly attached needles to nerf darts and shot his stepchildren with them. Bond was set at $1,,000 cash when Brian Alexander made his initial court appearance. The three children told authorities Alexander shot them with the needle-tipped nerf darts. One of the children showed investigators small red marks made on the skin from the darts. Alexander will return to court in December to face the three felony child abuse charges.

Grothman Fights For Work Centers For People With Different Abilities

Congressman Glenn Grothman says he has been going to bat for sheltered work centers, which provide jobs for people with different abilities. He says that includes places like Green Valley Enterprises in Beaver Dam, Brooke Industries in Fond du Lac, Lakeside Packaging in Winnebago, and Fox River Industries in Green Lake County. He says most counties have places for people with different abilities to work. Grothman says, “Recently the Federal Government has been hostile to these places feeling that most people don’t have to work there.” He says he’s talked to the parents and guardians and people who have worked at these industries themselves and they want to keep these places open and thriving and he’s been going to bat for them. He has spoken to people in the Department of Education to make sure people who are working now or want to work at the work centers in the future have that ability.

Volunteers Needed For Green Lake Harvest Fest

Volunteers are needed to help out with the 30th Annual Harvest Fest in Green Lake at the end of the month. The two-day event on Saturday and Sunday, September 29th and 30th will feature family friendly activities including a book sale, Harvest of Bargains sale at the Thrasher Opera House, a farm market, petting zoo, silent auction, music, raffles, a parade, Mad Dog & Merrill and more. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lian Walsh says it takes quite a few volunteers to pull off the event and they could use a few more. She says, “Well we need multiple volunteers I think 30 to 35 to run the weekend. You can contact the Chamber if you want to help us. We’ve got shifts available and we also posted those on Facebook this week so you can find the sign-up sheet for that.” To contact the Chamber call 920-294-3231.

Evers Gets Union Endorsement

One of the state’s biggest unions has endorsed State Schools Superintendent Tony Evers in his bid to be elected Governor. AFSCME Wisconsin President Paul Spink pointed to Evers’ strong record supporting working people as the primary reason for the endorsement. Evers faces Governor Scott Walker in the November 6th General Election. Walker supported ACT 10 and other legislation that has crippled unions in the state.

Senator Feyen Office Hours

State Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac, will be holding office hours in the district next week in the Town of Nepeuskun. He will be at the Town Hall at 1475 County Road E Monday evening from 6 to 7 pm. The Senator will be available to meet individually with constituents from the 18th Senate District to discuss issues that are important to them, or to field requests for assistance from the Senator. Senator Feyen will also be meeting with the elected officials to gather input on what they would like to see him focus on next session.
