Tornado County At Sixteen
The National Weather Service has confirmed an outbreak Tuesday of 16 tornadoes in east central Wisconsin on Tuesday evening. The service is reviewing additional locations. Several trees were uprooted and buildings were damaged. No injuries were reported. As for the number of tornadoes Fond du Lac County had the most with eight, Dodge, Green Lake and Marquette counties each had two, Sheboygan had one, and Calumet and Manitowoc counties had one that went through parts of both counties.
Calumet County and Manitowoc County
An EF-1 tornado touched down Tuesday north of Kiel near the Calumet and Manitowoc County lines, with peak winds reaching 90 mph. The tornado’s path was almost a mile long. A barn was destroyed and several trees were damaged and uprooted.
Dodge County
An EF-2 tornado touched down west of Brownsville and traveled almost four miles, crossing the Dodge and Fond du Lac County lines. Peak winds reached 125 mph.
An EF-1 tornado touched down in Brownsville, located in northeast Dodge County. Peak winds reached 107 mph and the tornado traveled more than 2.5 miles.
Fond du Lac County
An EF-1 tornado touched down in the town of Alto. With winds reaching 100 mph, it traveled a little more than a mile. Several trees were uprooted, with damage to some houses, large farm buildings and sheds.
An EF-1 tornado touched down northeast of Waupun and traveled 4.5 miles. It had wind speeds of 94 mph and ended in Oakfield.
An EF-0 tornado touched down south of Oakfield. Peak winds were 80 mph. Two large farm buildings sustained roof damage and trees were uprooted.
An EF-1 tornado touched down west of South Byron. Peak winds reached 100 mph. The tornado traveled just under a mile.
An EF-1 tornado touched down in South Byron. Peak winds reached 94 mph. It traveled 0.15 miles.
An EF-1 tornado touched down east of South Byron, with peak winds reaching 90 mph. It traveled 3 miles, ending southwest of Eden.
An EF-1 tornado touched down near Eden and traveled 4.5 miles with 90 mph winds.
An EF-0 tornado touched down in Dundee with 80 mph winds. It traveled 0.04 miles.
Green Lake County
An EF-1 tornado touched down west of the Village of Marquette. With winds reaching 90 mph, it was on the ground for 3.22 miles.
An EF-0 tornado touched down northwest of Markesan. With wind of 80 miles an hour, it had a path of about 2 miles.
Marquette County
An EF-1 tornado touched down south of Oxford.
An EF-1 tornado touched down northwest of Markesan.
UWO Ordered To Pay Foundation’s Debts
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh has been ordered to pay $15 million to cover the debts of the school’s private foundation stemming from a financial scandal involving five building projects. Federal Bankruptcy Judge Susan Kelley this week ruled that letters from two former UW-Oshkosh administrators, who promised to use university money to bail out the foundation, constitute enforceable contracts and must be honored. Last year the UWO Foundation filed for bankruptcy leaving state taxpayers on the hook for the building project loans. In June former Chancellor Richard Wells and former Vice Chancellor Thomas Sonnleitner pleaded not guilty to criminal charges of misconduct in office. They’re promises to banks that the university would guarantee any debt that foundation couldn’t cover were illegal.
Waupun Man Pleads To Child Porn Possession Charges
A 54-year-old Waupun man has been convicted of three counts of possessing child pornography. Timothy Hilt plead no contest to the felony charges. Seven similar charges brought against him were read into the record and dismissed when he appeared in Dodge County Court Thursday. A tip from an online watch dog service to police lead to Hilt’s arrest in May of 2017. Hilt consented to a search of his computer which uncovered hundreds of images of child porn. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 13th.
Chief Deputy Strand Retires
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office had a changing of the guard in its Chief Deputy position this week. After 37 ½ years with the department Chief Deputy Mark Strand took the traditional walk from the Sheriff’s Office to Western Avenue in Fond du Lac signaling his transition back to civilian life. Strand wanted to retire while Sheriff Mick Fink was still Sheriff. Fink will retire in January he and Strand came up through the department together. Meanwhile Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt takes over as Chief Deputy until January when he will become Sheriff barring a write-in campaign against him in the November election. Waldschmidt won the primary election between himself and Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Norton this past month.
