Backyard Chickens Contributing To Salmonella Increase

With more people allowed to keep chickens in their backyards the incidence of salmonella poisoning are increasing. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says 18 cases have been reported in Wisconsin, but none in Fond du Lac County. Cities like Fond du Lac and Oshkosh have ordinances that allow up to four female chickens, but no roosters. Mueller recommends not raising them if you have children under the age of five and thorough hand-washing if you handle them. She noticed when she attended the Washington County Fair last week that officials weren’t allowing baby chicks to be handled by fairgoers as a precaution.

Business owners Matt Morgan and Rose Hill of Fond du Lac and Drunk Busters of America Founder and Owner Curt Kindschuh are supporting Norton’s bid for election too. Norton faces Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt in the August 14th Primary Election.

The Ripon Common Council continues to kick around the idea of having at-large representation on the Council. City Administrator Lori Rich says no decisions have been made, but the Council is discussing having a public hearing on it or even placing an advisory referendum on the ballot during an upcoming election. She says the deadline for placing a referendum question on the November ballot is fast approaching so it would probably have to be in February or later if at all. The Council is currently made up of district representation with two council members for each of the four districts.
