Four Hurt During Race The Lake Crash

The conclusion of the Race the Lake bicycle race around Lake Winnebago was marred by a multi-bike collision that injured 15 riders and sent four of them to the hospital Sunday. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says it happened on County Highway WH near McCabe Road during a portion of the race when riders are getting weary and are drafting off each other to try and gain an advantage. He says they are passing within inches of each other and two of them collided starting a chain reaction. He says, “This stretch of roadway is downhill and it is also curvy and there were a pack of about 50 bicyclists traveling together in a real tight group and they were moving about 40 miles an hour when a couple of bikes made contact with each other.” The four who were taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac with non-life threatening injuries included Colin Hansel of Madison, Thomas Doughty of Joliet, Illinois, Martin Bell of Highland Park, Illinois, and Dave Haase of Fond du Lac who has competed in the Race Across America event.
