Advice For Renters

An official with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has advice for students and other tenants that will be renting apartments and homes this fall. Michelle Reinen is the Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. She recommends filling in the check-in sheet within a week of moving in so you can note any damage that was done prior to moving in. She also suggests getting a name from the landlord of the person you need to contact in case there are maintenance problems. When you do move out ask your landlord for a preliminary walk through before your final check out. Reinen says for some college students it will be the first time in their own place. She says it is important they know they have responsibilities and if there is a problem they should report it to the landlord. She says if a tenant has issues getting a security deposit back or wants to know more about their rights as a tenant they can call the department’s hot line at 1-800-422-7128.
