Ripon Man Bound Over For Trial
The 73-year-old Ripon man who allegedly threatened to shoot city officials over a property dispute has been bound over for trial. David Zeatlow was in Fond du Lac County Court for a preliminary hearing Thursday. According to the criminal complaint Zeatlow made the threat to an official with the Governor’s office when he tried to get that office to intervene and stop the razing of his home. The threat was passed along to Ripon Police who provided added security at City Hall and for the Mayor, City Administrator, and City Attorney. The home was torn down due to its condition and complaints from neighbors.
Alliant Energy Rates Frozen Through 2020
Alliant Energy tells us Wisconsin customers will see no increase to base electric and natural gas rates through 2020 under a verbal decision by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The decision keeps base rates at 2017 levels while bringing the Riverside Energy Center, a new highly efficient natural gas generation facility, online in 2019. Reductions in operating costs, the addition of low-cost wind energy and savings from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act helped enable the freeze. Alliant Energy President John Larsen says the decision is a win for their Wisconsin customers. A written order by the PSC is expected in the next several weeks.
Crime Rate Down In FDL In 2017
The crime rate in Fond du Lac reached a 10-year low in 2017. Fond du Lac Police recently shared information about the crime statistics from last year. The property crime rate in the city also hit a 10-year low with 903 property crimes a 6 percent drop from the previous year. The violent crime rate dropped 15 percent from 2016, but domestic abuse remains the leading cause of violent crime in the community. Robberies were up with 19 and there was a shooting death. Police Chief Bill Lamb says drug enforcement continues to be one of their top priorities. He notes that in the last 5 years they have arrested more than 400 people for felony drug-related activity.
Congressman Grothman Endorsed By NRLC
Congressman Glenn Grothman this past week was endorsed in his bid for reelection to Congress by the National Right to Life Committee. The committee is the country’s oldest pro-life organization with over 3,000 local chapters in all 50 states. Congressman Grothman has a perfect 100% pro-life voting score from the committee. He says it is an honor to be endorsed by the committee. Grothman faces Democratic challenger Dan Kohl in the November election. Kohl is the nephew of former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl.
ASTOP Helps Survivors Of Sexual Assault
An agency that assists survivors of sexual assault and abuse provides services in Fond du Lac, Green Lake and Waushara County. ASTOP provides Counseling, Legal and Medical Advocacy and Prevention Education. Rhianna Zuleger is a prevention educator for ASTOP. She says they do have locations in Fond du Lac and Ripon, but can arrange for small group meetings in Green Lake and Wautoma. To arrange for help call their 24-hour crisis line at 920-926-5395.
Public Facility Grants Awarded
Thirty-three communities across Wisconsin will be sharing $15 million for local infrastructure and community projects. Locally the Village of Oakfield in Fond du Lac County, the Village of Lowell in Dodge County and the City of Wautoma in Waushara County will each be getting $500,000 in block grants for the improvements they will make. Governor Scott Walker announced the public facility and planning grants on Friday.
Department Of Corrections Job Fairs Scheduled
The state’s Department of Corrections will be hosting local career fairs throughout the state between August 13th and the 30th. During these career fairs, interested individuals will have the opportunity to meet with Department human resources staff for resume assistance, application completion, and immediate interviews. The Department of Corrections is hiring correctional officers and sergeants for facilities in all parts of Wisconsin. Locally the DOC’s job fairs will be at the Fond du Lac Job Center from noon to 5 pm on August 14th, the Wautoma Job Center on August 15th from 9 am to 3 pm, Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac from 2:30 to 6:30 pm on August 21st, and at the Oshkosh Correctional Center on August 23rd from 1 to 8 pm.
