Advice In Wake Of Fatal Fall

An official with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department says the fatal fall of a 19-year-old Fond du Lac man from a cliff in Oakfield last week isa reminder that the County has a number of public recreational areas, but you still have to play it safe. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says that incident started out as a group hike. Then Pierce Neighbor fell from the cliff. The group had problems contacting authorities because of the cell phone coverage in that area, which also made it hard for authorities to pinpoint where they were. Waldschmidt urges residents to travel in a group when they plan such an adventure and to be aware of their surroundings.

Teaching Kids About Protective Behaviors

A prevention educator for an agency that assists survivors of sexual assault and abuse says it’s unfortunate, but they have to begin early to teach kids about potential sexual predators. ASTOP’s Rhianna Zuleger says the average age for a girl to be sexually assaulted occurs when they are 13 to 17 years old, and for a boy just four years old. Zuleger says they begin their prevention education with four year olds concentrating on protective behavior. When they work with kids from 5th grade on they talk about ASTOP’s services and when they hit high schools healthy relationships, consent, and human trafficking. ASTOP provides services in Fond du Lac, Ripon, Green Lake and Wautoma. ASTOP’s 24-hour crisis line is 920-926-5395.

Soldier On FDL Monument Does About Face

The soldier at the top of a Civil War monument in Fond du Lac’s Veterans Park is once again facing east. Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel says those types of monuments have a soldier facing east towards the Nation’s Capitol or toward battlegrounds. But the solider that has been in the park since 1902 was turned toward the west in 1987 because maple trees, also put in as a tribute, were obstructing the view of the soldier. The trees were recently removed when they decayed and became a threat to passing motorists. Thursday C.D. Smith Construction donated labor and a crane once again return the soldier to facing east. Buechel says the monument is a tribute to Union soldiers who fought and died in the Civil War. He says some of them came from the area including the famous Iron Brigade.

Winnebago County Board Passes Fair Maps Resolution

The Winnebago County Board recently approved a resolution that calls for a non-partisan approach to Legislative and Congressional redistricting. It became the 40th County in Wisconsin to approve the Fair Maps Resolution being pushed by the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin. Two of the League’s Winnebago County chapter members spoke to the Winnebago County Board in July before the board approved the resolution on a voice vote. The state’s approach to redistricting, criticized by Democrats as gerrymandering to favor the GOP, made its way up the Federal Court ladder to the U.S. Supreme Court where the high court decided in June to send it back to federal district court.
