FDL County Sales Tax Discussed

The Fond du Lac County Board’s Finance Committee discussed the County’s half-percent sales tax when they met last night. County Executive Al Buechel says he would like to see it continue after a December 2021 sunset date. He updated the Finance Committee on the sales tax and how it will impact the County’s 2019 Budget. Buechel says the sales tax was originally created to help keep Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac, but it has done much more. Buechel says, “We’ve had over a $1 billion in investment in this county and added over 3,000 jobs and that’s just the businesses that have been impacted by the sales tax which includes Mercury, Alliance Laundry Systems, Wells Manufacturing and other smaller industries as well.” He says in addition the sale tax has paid for about $3 million a year in road improvements for the County. Ultimately it will be up to the County Board whether the sales tax is extended past the December 2021 sunset date.
