Charges Against Ripon Women Who Claimed Police Misconduct

27 July 2018 News

Charges have been filed against a woman and her daughter who allegedly filed false reports of police misconduct against two Ripon Police officers. According to the criminal complaints 70-year-old Marie Stapel and 47-year-old Sahar Monrreal of Ripon filed complaints against Captain Troy Damsteegt and Officer Trevor Hanke for incidents that allegedly happened at Monrreal’s apartment last January 10th. The officers were there with the property owner and the Ripon Fire District Chief investigating a report that Monrreal had been lighting fires to test smoke alarms. Ripon Police Chief Bill Wallner asked the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the complaints against his officers. Based on the investigation, which included footage from the officers body cameras and interviews with the property owner and Fire Chief, there was sufficient evidence to refute the women’s claims. The investigator felt it was appropriate to refer the case to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office for charges against the two women. The two women will make their initial court appearances on August 2nd.
