Motorcyclist Killed In Calumet County Crash
A 50-year-old Whitelaw man is dead after he lost control of his motorcycle, missed a curve and was thrown from the bike Saturday. The Calumet County Sheriff’s Department says the crash happened in Rantoul on County Highway JJ west of Long Lake Road at 2:46 p.m. The driver had a 36-year-old woman on his bike. She was also thrown from the motorcycle but after being taken to the hospital, she was released.
Highway 45 Project Starts In FDL County
Works begins today on the US Highway 45 construction project in Fond du Lac County. Improvements will be made from the Village of Eden to County Highway V in the City of Fond du Lac. Highway 45 south of US Highway 151 will be closed and detoured during construction. The $4.1 million project is expected to finish in November 2018. The project includes highway resurfacing, realignment of the Highway 45/County H intersection, reconstruction of a curve south of Highway 151, re-decking of the bridge over the DeNeveu Creek, culvert replacements, and more. The Highway 45 bridge over Highway 151 in Fond du Lac will have a girder replaced. The bridge was struck by an over-height vehicle.
Public Hearing On EIS Statement For Highway 23 Expansion Project
The state’s Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing Tuesday in Fond du Lac for the limited scope supplemental draft environmental impact statement being prepared for the State Highway 23 expansion project. The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the UW-Fond du Lac campus. A short presentation will be held at 6:30 with opportunities to comment throughout the hearing. Officials in Fond du Lac and Sheboygan County would like to see the 19-mile stretch of highway between Fond du Lac and Plymouth expanded to four lanes to accommodate increased traffic and make the road safer. A legal battle over the accuracy of a traffic count for the highway led to the delay of the initial project.
Extra Patrols During Country USA
The Wisconsin State Patrol will have extra patrols in the Oshkosh area as the County USA event kicks off Tuesday. They will be looking for intoxicated drivers so they are asking festival goers to designate a driver if they plan on drinking while attending the five-day event. Officials say local law enforcement is especially concerned with the recent trend of drunk drivers leaving Country USA events who are not old enough to drink alcohol. Sergeant Dan Diedrich of the State Patrol’s Fond du Lac Post says their goal is to get people to drive sober, not to make more arrests. He notes events like Country USA are important and vital to the local economy.
Taking Precautions Against West Nile Virus
Rain and the hot and humid temperatures over the weekend is likely to increase our mosquito population and with that in mind the Fond du Lac County Health Department is asking people to take precautions to avoid contracting West Nile virus. The majority of people who get West Nile, about 80 percent do not get sick. But one percent become seriously ill. Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says to limit your time outdoors at dawn and dusk. She recommends wearing light-colored clothing and long pants, loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts, and tucking pants in socks when outdoors. Mosquito repellent is also suggested. To cut down the breeding ground for mosquitoes eliminate containers, old tires, and other means of collecting water from yards. Dead birds are one indicator that the virus may be in the area.
