Local Incident Illustrates Danger Of Illegal Fireworks
The Chief of the Ripon Area Fire District says a local incident last year illustrates why illegal fireworks can be so dangerous. Tim Saul says two individuals were shooting fireworks from their vehicles at houses. One of the fireworks went awry before it could leave the inside of the vehicle and started a fire in the car. Saul says one of the individuals was badly burned trying to put out the fire. He says, “Those individuals in the vehicle they had thousands and thousands of dollars worth of illegal fireworks in their back seat which they tried getting out while the vehicle was on fire and one of the occupants of the vehicle had to be transferred to the burn center with second degree burns.”
Never Leave Children Inside A Car During Hot Temperatures
It would seem to go without saying, but with a heat advisory into Saturday evening a public health official says you should never leave children or pets in your car while you are popping into a store. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the temperature of a car sitting in the sun quickly elevates, which can increase the chances of someone sitting inside suffering heat stroke. She says, “So cars can get extremely hot even if it is just 80 degrees on a cool day, a regular day the temperature inside of a car can reach up to or more than 100 degrees in just 10 minutes.” Officials also say nearly 3 in 10 heatstroke deaths happen when an unattended child gains access to a vehicle.
Oshkosh Changing Apartment Inspection Policy
The city of Oshkosh is planning on changing how it inspects apartments, to comply with a new state law. The city adopted a new policy earlier this year. The new law requires local government to only inspect rental properties that the city deems unsafe or unsightly. Before, the inspections were city-wide. If a property that is inspected has no violation, or the violation is corrected, city inspectors can’t return to the property for five years. The inspection fees would be $240 per unit. If the apartment unit is vacant, the fee is $150.
Hazardous Waste Spill Possible Anywhere
Waushara County’s new Emergency Management Director says a hazardous waste link is something that can happen anywhere. Norm Duesterhoeft is preparing his staff to deal with these man-made disasters. He notes farms throughout the County use different chemicals to fertilize their crops. He says, “If there happens to be an unexpected leak and the wind conditions are right it could affect a different municipality. Matter of fact we’re going to be conducting an exercise coming up in August that will reflect that type of emergency within the County.”
FDL Noon Rotary Gift To The Community
The Fond du Lac Noon Rotary Club is making a generous donation to the City of Fond du Lac in honor of the club’s 100th anniversary. Earlier this year the club had solicited ideas for how it could best serve the community with a $100,000 donation. The winning idea also ties in nicely with the City’s building of a new pavilion at Lakeside Park. The Rotary Club thought a patio type plaza behind the new pavilion, right on the water, would be the perfect gift. It will be known as Fond du Lac Noon Rotary Centennial Plaza. The design for the plaza is just getting underway. The plaza should be ready for use by 2020.
