The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says two men arrested following a high speed chase last week likely were involved in illegal drug trafficking in the county. The two men, one from Illinois and the other from Milwaukee, were arrested following the chase that started on Highway 151 and ended when the car crashed on Highway 49 in Brandon. Sheriff’s captain Ryan Waldschmidt says both men face drug-related charges. Waldschmidt says the vehicle was involved in prior chases in Fond du Lac County and Illinois over the past few months.

County health departments in western Wisconsin are warning people about recent potential exposure to measles. The La Crosse and Trempealeau county health departments were notified this month that an out-of-state visitor had measles in its contagious stage. The departments contacted places in La Crosse, Onalaska and Galesville that may have been exposed to the disease. Officials will try contacting people who may have visited those places during the exposure period to inform them about symptoms and determine if they’re at risk. Sites include a Comfort Inn, a Dollar Tree, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Champions Riverside Resort, a Fairfield Inn and a Texas Roadhouse. Measles is a serious respiratory disease that can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes and a rash. People who are pregnant, infants and those who haven’t been vaccinated are most at risk. The measles vaccine is 93 percent effective after one dose, and becomes 97 percent effective after two doses.

A Veterans Affairs hospital in Wisconsin is using nontraditional therapies for pain and mental health as officials continue to address problems with over-prescribing medication at the facility. The Tomah VA Medical Center is one of 18 veterans hospitals across the country launching the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Whole Health program. Whole Health coaches help VA patients set personal health and wellness goals, address chronic pain, prevent illness or injury and treat mental health needs. The program also uses alternative therapies like tai chi, acupuncture and Healing Touch, which focuses on restoring a person’s energy field. The initiative comes four years after a veteran died at the facility from a mixture of prescribed drugs. Federal investigations found that some staff were over-prescribing drugs.
