Fond du Lac County authorities are asking a Marinette County judge to reconsider his decision to place a convicted child sex offender at a Van Dyne area residence. Fond du lac County Sheriff Mick Fink drove to Marinette Tuesday to serve a petition signed by the Fond du Lac County District Attorney, Corporation Counsel and town of Eldorado attorney. Fink says the judge’s order to place Jeffrey Butler at a residence on Nitschke Road doesn’t seem to follow the spirit or letter of the law. The judge’s order comes after Gov. Scott Walker on March 25 signed into law a bill that requires sexually violent people to live in their home counties. Fink says he can’t believe that there isn’t an appropriate location in Marinette County to place Butler. Fink says it’s the sixth time in the last three years the town of Eldorado is fighting to prevent the placement of an out of county sex offender in their community. He says the judge hasn’t followed any of the parameters established by the Department of Health Services before a sex offender is placed in a community. The judge ordered the placement be made by April 16. Butler was convicted of sexually assaulting a child in Marinette County.

Menards is suing a Georgia company for personal injury claims tied to moving walkways installed in some of the Wisconsin-based home improvement chain’s stores. Menards filed the lawsuit against ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corp. last week in Eau Claire County Court. The suit alleges the elevator company breached its contract, broke Wisconsin product warranty laws and failed to assume defense in two pending injury cases. Menards sought walkway inspections, changes to prevent injuries and for ThyssenKrupp to be responsible for defending injury claims in November 2014. Menards then wrote a letter to the company in March 2015 after receiving no response. The letter said Menards would pursue its own changes and bill the company for the costs. A ThyssenKrupp spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit.

A majority of outdoor lovers who attended the Conservation Congress’ spring hearings say legislators should impose a user fee on state properties. The congress asked attendees at its spring hearings Monday if they would support a $5 fee on state land, fishery, wildlife and natural area users between ages 16 and 64. The congress says the fee could generate more than $3 million to help maintain the properties. A majority of hearing attendees in 49 counties said yes. A majority in 22 counties said no. The congress also asked hearing attendees if legislators should end the group hunting law, which allows a member of a hunting party to kill a deer and place another party member’s tag on it. A majority of attendees in 64 counties rejected the idea.
