A tax break package designed to stop giant papermaker Kimberly-Clark from eliminating 600 jobs in northeast Wisconsin appears to be dead in the state Legislature. Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he is hopeful that Gov. Scott Walker’s administration can continue working with the company and possibly take action without needing the Legislature to pass a bill. The Assembly previously approved the bill modeled after incentives given for the Foxconn project in southeastern Wisconsin. The tax credit on jobs for Kimberly-Clark was expected to cost between $100 million and $115 million. But Fitzgerald says it’s hard to move ahead with the bill not knowing exactly what Kimberly-Clark may need in order to keep two factories in the Neenah area open. The company did not ask for the bill and never committed to keeping the jobs if it passed.

A new report shows home sales in Wisconsin hit a record high between December and February, which are typically off-months. The Wisconsin Association of Realtors recorded more than 13,400 homes sold during typically slower months for sales. February saw a nearly 6 percent increase in home sales compared to the same time last year. The report stated a healthy economy and low unemployment boosted demand, despite tight housing inventories across the state. The median home price was $166,000 in February, a more than 7 percent increase compared to last year.
