Authorities say a team of explosive experts has successfully detonated volatile chemicals at a Beaver Dam apartment where a man was killed in an explosion earlier this week. Police Chief John Kreuziger says Wednesday’s detonation eliminated “the threatening explosive material.” Kreuziger says sandbags were placed in the apartment to minimize the impact of the controlled explosion, which he says caused less severe damage than expected. The man’s body was removed from the building Tuesday night. His name has not been released. Some tenants at the complex have been displaced since Monday’s explosion. The police chief says some tenants will be able to return to their apartments Wednesday and Thursday. Kreuziger says the investigation involving federal, state and local authorities continues into why the man possessed a significant amount of explosives.

Waupun IS selected to receive a grant to study the needs of an aging population. City administrator Kathy Schlieve says Waupun is the state’s only municipality to receive the grant. Schlieve says the $15,000 grant will be used to develop a plan to help older adults remain independent and also support caregivers. Schlieve says in conjunction with the grant, the city of Waupun partnered with Agnesian HealthCare to create the Waupun Coalition on Aging. The coalition will conduct an assessment to create an inventory of existing services and resources and identify the needs of older adults.

The deadly 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School has inspired a Wisconsin woman to create a gunshot alarm system that alerts those in a building to the sound of gunfire and notifies emergency responders. Stacy Jax tested the Trinity Gunshot Alarm System last week at an indoor shooting range with Sauk County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. James Hodges. The system is similar to a fire alarm. Sensors placed in a building will set off an alarm when they detect and confirm the sound of a gunshot. The sensors can also help authorities by pinpointing the location of the shot. Jax is a former substitute teacher for the Baraboo School District. She began working on the idea with software development company Acumium in February 2016.

Dozens of concerned residents and activists have asked the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to reject an application from the city of Racine to draw 7 million gallons of water daily from Lake Michigan for a proposed Foxconn plant. At a public hearing on the request Wednesday in Sturtevant, many who testified said the proposal to take water for a corporation would violate the Great Lakes Compact requirement that such requests be for public uses. They also said Foxconn has not provided enough detail about what toxic chemicals it might be pouring into the lake when it returns most of the water. Foxconn Technology Group has said it is committed to good environmental practices. The company says approval of the city of Racine’s request is important to setting up its infrastructure. The Taiwanese electronics company wants to build a massive flat-screen facility in Mount Pleasant, about 30 miles south of Milwaukee and 60 miles north of Chicago.
