One person is killed following a one vehicle accident in Fond du Lac County. The accident happened Thursday on County Highway K, north of US Highway 45, in the Town of Empire. Initial investigation shows the vehicle traveled off the roadway and over turned, pinning the operator in the vehicle. The driver and lone occupant, a 64-year-old Campbellsport woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

A Fond du Lac teenager accused of sexually assaulting at least six teenage girls faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted. Seventeen year old Marquez Jackson was recently bound over for trial in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court on 20 charges including sexual assault of a child, strangulation-suffocation, child enticement and exposing genitals to a child. According to a criminal complaint Jackson sexually assaulted and choked six girls ages 15 to 17. The incidents occurred at a transitional living facility, the YMCA and at Fond du Lac High School. According to the complaint Jackson forced one girl to perform oral sex in an elevator at the high school. Jackson is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on $100,000 cash bond.

New census numbers show Wisconsin’s population grew slightly in the last fiscal year. According to data released in December, the state’s population increased by 0.4 percent from July 2016 to July 2017. That’s the largest uptick in a single year since 2010. The state now has a total population of 5.8 million and ranks 30th for annual population growth. David Egan-Robertson is a demographer with the University of Wisconsin’s Applied Population Laboratory. He attributes the increase to fewer people leaving the state. He says the census estimates that Wisconsin only lost about 2,000 people to domestic migration. The state has seen more people leaving than moving in since the Great Recession began in 2007. The numbers also show that much of the growth is the result of children being born in the state.

Democratic Madison Mayor Paul Soglin says he will be announcing next week that he’s running for governor. Soglin says he’s hired a campaign manager and plans to get into the crowded Democratic primary “barring unforeseen circumstances.” Soglin has long promised he would join the race sometime in January. His hiring of a campaign manager with experience in previous statewide races shows he’s serious about the governor’s race. Soglin is up for re-election as mayor in April 2019. Soglin says he will announce later whether he plans to run for re-election. Soglin was first elected mayor in 1973 and has served on and off in the position for 20 years. Walker is seeking his third term as governor.
