A Fond du Lac man is been charged in connection with a fatal vehicle versus pedestrian crash in Fond du Lac. Fifty one year old Peter Anderson made his initial Fond du Lac court appearance last week on charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and operating without a valid driver’s license. Bail was set at $10,000 cash. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 30. Police say Anderson was the driver of a pick up that struck and killed 54 year old Jeffrey Koenigs on South Park Avenue near 2nd Street last Saturday.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has launched a crash reduction effort following a spike in traffic fatalities this year. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says 18 people have lost their lives on Dodge County roadways this year. That’s up from 12 in 2016, and an average of 10.6 traffic fatalities from 2011 through 2015. Schmidt says the Sheriff’s Office will be conducting increased enforcement efforts, especially in high crash areas focusing on speed enforcement and aggressive driving. Schmidt says between 2011 and 2014, nearly 42 percent of fatal crashes were alcohol or drug related, 21 percent were speed related and 26 percent were a result of inattentive driving. Schmidt says his office has been working on a comprehensive, long term problem solving effort to improve traffic safety, with a goal of a 25 to 50 percent reduction in fatal crashes next year

Using social networks to create fake personas to harass or defraud someone would be illegal under legislation lawmakers are considering in Wisconsin. The scam is known as “catfishing” and Wisconsin’s pending measure would make it a misdemeanor to pretend to be someone else with intent to threaten, harass, or defraud another person. About a dozen states already have laws against online impersonation. Wisconsin lawmakers sponsoring the bill say the crime is more commonplace but there’s no way to address it under state law. Just this week, retired NBA star Ray Allen told a Florida court he was the victim of catfishing by a man trying to extort money from him. Wisconsin’s bill had a public hearing in the state Assembly on Nov. 16, but has yet to receive a vote.

A Wisconsin woman’s charity organization is close to sending its 10,000th care package to U.S. military personnel serving overseas. LeAnn Boudwine started Support The Troops 11 years ago. Boudwine had been sending care packages to her sons until she learned that some of their fellow soldiers weren’t receiving any gifts. She began sending troops packages from her home with the help of her friends. The operation eventually expanded and now operates out of donated space in the basement of a local business. Boudwine hopes to send the charity’s 10,000th care package by the end of the year. Packages are filled with donated items such as candy, nonperishable food, activity books, DVDs, personal care items, clothing and holiday items.
