The Fond du Lac County executive says he was saddened to hear the news that Saputo Cheese was closings its Fond du Lac manufacturing plant. The company announced last week the East Scott Street plant would be closing by next May leaving 126 employees out of work. County executive Al Buechel worked at the plant more than 50 years ago when it was Tolibia Cheese, saying it was one of the community icons. Buechel says the news is a reminder of the importance of encouraging local companies to modernize and expand their facilities.

The Fond du Lac School Board is committing up to $750,000 for a new career construction academy at Fond du lac High school. At their meeting Monday night the school board agreed to fund an additional $250,000 to the $500,000 already earmarked so construction can start next spring. Local businesses asked the board for more money after a fundraising effort fell $300,000 short of its goal. The total project cost is estimated at $1.1 million. Superintendent Dr. Jim Sebert says the academy will primarily target students who don’t plan on going to college. Sebert says the program enables educators to teach students the fundamentals of several construction trades. He says Fond du Lac companies, like C.D. Smith for example, will look at construction academy students as potential future employees.

The Christmas tree that will be on display in the Wisconsin state Capitol this year is coming from the Town of Emery, about 220 miles north of Madison. Gov. Scott Walker announced Tuesday that the 40-foot balsam fir is being donated by Jim Ryf. The tree is due to arrive at the Capitol this week and will be installed after Thanksgiving. The tree will be decorated with ornaments made by Wisconsin school children. The theme this year is the Capitol’s 100th birthday. The tree is on display in the rotunda of the Capitol during the holiday season.

The parent company of MillerCoors is expanding its Milwaukee footprint with a business service center to support its operations in North America. Parent Molson Coors Brewing Company says the new center will be located at the Miller Valley Campus on Milwaukee’s west side. The center is expected to eventually employ about 150 people who will work in finance and accounting, human resources and procurement. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has provided $1.7 million in state income tax credits over the next four years, as well as a workforce training grant of up to $750,000. MillerCoors recently broke ground on a $50 million expansion of the Tenth Street Brewery near downtown Milwaukee.
