One person is rescued after falling two dozen feet into a silo. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office was called to S & S Dairy in the Town of Calumet Monday evening where Firefighters were able to remove the man, identified as 27-year-old Joshua Sabel, safely. Sabel stated he had climbed into the silo to close a door, and as he was climbing across the silo unloader, one of the three cables that was holding up the silo unloader broke. Sabel was able to grab onto one of the cables and pull himself up onto a ledge in the silo, where he called for help. No one was injured in the incident.

The Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer says the best defense against the flu is getting a flu shot. Kim Mueller says there is plenty of vaccine available. Mueller says the flu shot is recommended for everybody ages six months and older. Mueller says for the second straight year the flu mist is not available. The mist was not as effective in preventing the flu. The Public Health Department is offering flu shot clinics throughout the county this month.

Faye Rogers of Horicon is the lucky winner of the $49,000 jackpot from the Thursday, October 5th Badger 5 drawing. Rogers purchased her ticket at Kwik Trip at 305 Barstow Street in Horicon. Rogers’s ticket matched the winning numbers of 3, 4, 13, 15 and 25. Badger 5 is a daily lotto game available only in Wisconsin. Winners at all prize levels have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prizes by mail or in person at the Lottery’s Madison or Milwaukee office.

Attorney General Brad Schimel is telling senior citizens to be aware of the dangers of abusing opioid medication. Schimel said during a news conference Monday at the Wisconsin State Bar ahead of the first meeting of his new elder abuse task force that more than 4,000 state residents aged 55 or older were hospitalized for opioid addiction or overdoses last year. He urged seniors to use their drugs only as prescribed, not to share them and to dispose of them properly. Schimel says the task force will look at ways to protect senior citizens from opioid abuse and how to keep people from stealing their prescription drugs. He said the task force also will examine how to protect senior citizens from financial fraud and improve assisted living.

Wisconsin Veterans Affairs Secretary Dan Zimmerman says the department is working aggressively to deal with nursing shortages and worker dissatisfaction at the King veterans home. Zimmerman testified Tuesday before the Legislature’s Audit Committee as it reviewed a report found King has not been able to keep additional nursing positions filled, leading to a dramatic increase in overtime and complaints. Zimmerman says the shortage of nursing staff, particularly nursing assistants, is the largest personnel-related challenge at King. He says the increase in overtime has placed an “unsustainable burden” on workers and the department’s budget. He says the department receives far more thank you letters than complaints, but “complaints are much more sensational.”
