An advisory committee finalizes its recommendations for revising Wisconsin’s long-term chronic wasting disease plan. The committee finished its work Wednesday. The recommendations include targeted culling, penalties for deer farm escapes, enhanced deer farm fencing, requiring deer farms to be insured to cover the state’s cost of recovering escaped animals and a call for a statewide baiting and feeding ban. The recommendations now go to the Department of Natural Resources. Agency officials will prepare a final plan to present to the Natural Resources Board in March. It’s unclear when the board will vote on the changes. The DNR, the Conservation Congress and state agriculture officials formed the committee last year to review the state’s 15-year CWD plan. The committee has been working on developing its recommendations since October.

Attorney General Brad Schimel says the state has renewed a deal that provides public entities with rebates on an opioid overdose antidote. Schimel issued a news release Wednesday saying he has renewed an agreement with Amphastar Pharmaceuticals that calls for the company to continue to provide a $6 rebate for each Amphastar naloxone syringe public entities purchase through Feb. 1, 2018. Naloxone is often branded as Narcan. It can be administered as a nasal spray or injection and can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes. Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill in 2013 that permits first responders and paramedics to administer naloxone if they’ve received the proper training.

Gov. Scott Walker is proposing to increase a tax credit for Wisconsin’s working poor as part of his initiative to wean people off of state welfare programs. Walker announced Wednesday that he was proposing increasing the maximum Earned Income Tax Credit from $135 to $371 for low income workers with one child. He says that would benefit about 130,000 small families and bring about 850 families over the poverty line. The move to increase the tax credit comes after Walker cut it in 2011. Walker says in a statement that families are the “foundation of our society” and his proposal is vital to his plans to ensure working families are rewarded, not penalized. The plan will be part of the state budget Walker releases next week.
