Two people are injured after a car drove into the back of a semi in Dodge County. The accident happened Saturday morning around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of County Highway A and W in the Town of Oak Grove. Investigation shows the driver of the car, a 24-year-old Horicon man, failed to stop for a stop sign while traveling east on County highway W. He then struck an empty fuel tank trailer that was traveling north on County Highway A. The driver was transported to Beaver Dam Community Hospital. A passenger in the car, a 24-year-old Juneau man, was transported to Oconomowoc Hospital. Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. The semi driver was not injured.
A former secretary at a Waupun school accused of stealing money from two school accounts is bound over for trial. Probable cause was found at a preliminary hearing Friday for Kathleen Schwark on charges of theft in a business setting. Waupun Deputy Police Chief Scott Louden says Schwark is accused of stealing as much as $5000 from the schools’ sunshine and soda accounts while working as a secretary at Meadowview Primary School. Schwark is free on a $2500 signature bond.
A man involved in an armed stand off in Fond du Lac is bound over for trial. Forty nine year old Brian Santistevan waived his preliminary hearing Friday on charges of disorderly conduct, battery, false imprisonment, threats to injure and strangulation-suffocation. Police were called to a residence on Sibley Street this month for a report that a woman and her 8 year old daughter were being held at knifepoint in their residence by the woman’s estranged boyfriend. The woman was able to leave the house with her child after the suspect had fallen asleep. The SWAT team was called and after a four and a half hour standoff Stantistevan was taken into custody.
A panel of federal judges orders the Wisconsin Legislature to redraw legislative boundaries by November, rejecting calls from those challenging the maps to have the judges do the work. The three-judge panel released its decision in the redistricting case Friday. The state is expected to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take the case. State attorneys had asked for the Republican-controlled Legislature to be allowed to draw the maps if the Supreme Court orders them redone. Democrats who sued over the boundaries wanted the judges to do that. A dozen voters sued in 2015 over the Republican-drawn boundaries, alleging they unconstitutionally consolidated GOP power and discriminated against Democrats. The three-judge panel agreed in a 2-1 ruling in November but didn’t order any immediate action.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have received federal approval to start testing driverless cars at sites around Wisconsin. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently designated UW-Madison’s Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory as one of 10 groups nationwide as proving grounds for the vehicles. The lab does not have any driverless cars of its own, and has not yet partnered with a company that wants to test the technology in Wisconsin. But researchers say the federal designation boosts Wisconsin’s profile in research into the cars, known as autonomous vehicles. Researcher Peter Rafferty says the lab is talking to companies about testing the vehicles. Proponents say driverless cars can make roads safer by cutting down on crashes caused by mistakes, inattention or drunken driving.
Vince Lombardi’s 1956 New York Giants World Championship ring generated the most money at a recent auction of his memorabilia. The ring sold for over $50,100. Lombardi was the Giants’ offensive coordinator and became head coach of the Green Bay Packers in 1959. The seven Lombardi-related items raised a total of nearly $127,600. Terry Melia of SCP Auctions says they raised more money than expected. Lombardi’s son, Vince Lombardi Jr., put the items up for auction himself, saying they were in a safe deposit box “collecting dust.” The other items included a George Halas Night Patek Philippe wristwatch, a congratulatory telegram from President John F. Kennedy, a Green Bay Packers 14-karat gold and diamond cuff link, a Green Bay Packers 14-karat gold and diamond pendant, a Bishop’s Charity Game Bulova wristwatch, and New York Giants handwritten playbook notes.
