A new report says moving the Department of Natural Resources’ forestry headquarters to northern Wisconsin would likely cost millions of dollars. The 2015-17 state budget mandated the DNR prepare a proposal to move the headquarters. The agency submitted a report on a potential move as part of its 2017-19 budget request. That request was released Friday. The report shows the DNR has narrowed down cities to Hayward, Rhinelander and Wausau. The report estimated building a new headquarters in Wausau would cost $5.9 million and $10.8 million per year to run for 20 years. Leasing space would cost $1 million the first year and $9.3 million annually for 20 years.

The state Department of Natural Resources plans to launch a five-year study this fall to gain a better understanding of how predators interact with chronic wasting disease to affect deer survival in southwestern Wisconsin. The study will begin by capturing predators such as bobcats and coyotes and placing radio collars on them so the agency can track them. The agency will begin capturing and collaring deer in January. The collars will record and display the animals information multiple times per day, resulting in what DNR officials say will be unprecedented information on movement, behavior, habitat use and predator-prey interactions. The study calls for capturing and collaring 200 adult deer, 100 fawns and 60 predators annually.

The U.S. Navy launches a new littoral combat ship in Wisconsin. The future USS Wichita was christened Saturday at the shipyard in Marinette, where it was built. The ship’s sponsor, novelist Kate Lehrer, wife of former “PBS NewsHour” anchor Jim Leher, broke a champagne bottle across the ship’s bow just before launch. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin was keynote speaker. The ship will undergo additional outfitting and testing before its anticipated delivery next year. The speedy warship is the nation’s 13th littoral combat ship. The team led by defense contractor Lockheed Martin has six Freedom-class ships — which have a steel monohull — under construction in Marinette, and is procuring materials for three more. It’s the third U.S. Navy ship named USS Wichita.
