A North Fond du Lac man and a Fond du Lac woman face drug charges following a traffic stop on Interstate 41. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle Sunday on I-41 near County Highway B. During a search of the vehicle and the two occupants, 132 grams of heroin, 44 grams of marijuana and four grams of crack cocaine were confiscated. The Sheriff’s Office says the street value of the drugs is estimated at $45,000. A 24 year old North Fond du Lac man and 29 year old Fond du Lac woman were arrested.

A Stevens Point man is convicted in federal court of robbing several banks across the state including Hometown Bank in Fond du Lac. Thirty nine year old Jason Kiedrowski pleaded guilty to a charge of Larceny after police say he robbed six credit unions and banks in Wisconsin. In addition to the Hometown Bank robbery, Kiedrowski also admitted to bank robberies in Appleton, Grand Chute, Eau Claire, Janesville and Depere. The March 24th 2015 Fond du Lac bank robbery occurred minutes before another bank robbery suspect shot and killed a state patrol trooper across the street near the West Johnson Street Pick N Save grocery store.

Verizon Wireless is suing the City of Appleton because its Common Council rejected the company’s plans for a cell tower. A civil complaint filed by Verizon says the council’s decision is in direct conflict with Wisconsin law. The council voted last month to deny Verizon’s permit for a tower on the city’s north side, despite a warning from the city attorney not to reject it. The city has until Sept. 15 to respond to the lawsuit. State law restricts how and when local municipalities can deny cell towers and don’t account for height or aesthetics. Exceptions are made for public health or safety. The complaint asks the court to reverse the city’s decision and pay Verizon attorney fees.

An 18-year-old man is accused of luring four children under age 10 into an apartment above a vacant Green Bay restaurant, assaulting two of them and setting the building on fire. Jesus Castilloveitia-Quinton is facing five criminal charges, including child abuse and arson. Castilloveitia-Quinton told police the apartment above the Ten O One Club was his “secret hideout.” Court documents say he struck two children, ages 8 and 9, in the face, put his hand over their mouths and started pouring bleach on the floor Sunday night. All managed to escape the burning building. Castilloveitia-Quinton was arrested near the scene with help from a police dog. He had a competency exam following a request from his attorney during a brief court appearance Tuesday in Brown County.

Wisconsin’s state superintendent describes a drop in ACT college preparatory test results as a “solid starting place,” given that they represent the first year that all high school seniors took the exam. Wisconsin’s average score on the ACT test this year dropped 1.7 points to 20.5. That is below the national average of 20.8. But when looking only at the 18 states where 100 percent of seniors took the exam, Wisconsin’s score was fourth highest. State Superintendent Tony Evers says the results “represent achievement for all students, not just those headed to college who took the ACT in prior years.” In 2015, 73 percent of graduating seniors took the test in Wisconsin and the average score was 22.2.

Steven Avery’s attorney is expected to file a motion asking for new testing and access to DNA evidence as her client mounts an appeal of his conviction in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. An online case history from the Appeals Court District 2 shows Kathleen Zellner has until Aug. 29 to file the paperwork in person. The court has ruled that motions cannot be filed electronically. In a story published on Aug. 18, Zellner told the New York Times that she plans to file a motion requesting access to DNA evidence from the crime scene. She also plans to order new testing that was not possible during trial. Zellner says certain evidence points to another suspect.
