Fond du Lac police say they believe a convicted child sex offender who is being released from prison is a danger to re-offend. Assistant police chief Steve Klein says 29 year old Cody Richey will be living at a residence at 457 Thomas Street when he gets out of prison August 16th. Richey spent time in prison for sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl with the use of force. A second charge related to the sexual assault of a 14 year old girl was dismissed and read into the record. Special conditions of Richey’s release include no contact with the victim, no unsupervised contact with minors, electronic and GPS monitoring and lifetime registration with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registration program.

Police from three counties want people to continue to check their storage units as their investigation into unit thefts in the area continue. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Lt. Cameron McGee says their department became involved after a break in at a storage unit in Rosendale July 26th. McGee says they were able to link that break in to a suspect in West Bend. On August 3rd, Fond du Lac County and Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with West Bend Police, executed a search warrant at the suspects residence and storage unit. At that time, McGee says four pickup truckloads of property was recovered. Mayville police also recovered a large amount of stolen property in connection with the same rash of break-ins. McGee says most of the property remains unidentified. Anyone who notices items missing or have a storage unit that has been tampered with is asked to contact police.

Fond du Lac could be home next summer to a baseball team comprised of college athletes on summer break. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Marian University have announced plans for a team that will be part of the Northwoods League. The Timber Rattlers would spend $1.5 million to renovate the baseball field at Marian University. The grandstands will be upgraded to include expanded bleachers and seating areas, expanded concessions, new restrooms and retail space to sell merchandise. The renovations would increase seating capacity to approximately 2,000 people. The Fond du lac Plan Commission voted to approve a special use permit for the project at their meeting Monday night. The city council will consider the proposal at their next meeting. Under the deal the Timber Rattlers would own the Fond du lac team, leasing the field from Marian. The Timber Rattlers are the Class A minor league affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Northwoods League is not affiliated with Major League baseball.

An Upper Peninsula iron ore mine will buy power for 20 years from a utility through an agreement designed to provide a long-term power solution for the region whose residents have faced uncertainty over rate hikes. Under the deal announced Monday, Milwaukee-based WEC Energy Group will add 170 megawatts of natural gas-powered electricity across two new sites in the U.P. The power will supply Cleveland-based Cliff Natural Resources’ Tilden Mine and other customers. The agreement stems from a 2015 settlement with the state of Michigan. WEC’s coal-fired Presque Isle Power Plant would still close by 2020. Gov. Rick Snyder says the new deal, which his administration helped facilitate and which still requires regulatory approval, is “extremely promising, especially given the ability to easily adapt to changing demands.”

Three explosive devices were found inside a vacant apartment in the Town of Gresham in Shawano County. Stockbridge-Munsee Police Chief Jim Hoffman says someone was either moving in or checking out the apartment when they found a box with explosives Sunday afternoon. The person who found the box carried it outside and called police. Police evacuated the immediate area and alerted the Brown/Outagamie Bomb Squad. The bomb squad took the devices back to Brown County to examine them. One device was a military hand grenade but the explosive charge was removed. Police are still waiting for the bomb squad commander’s report on what the other two devices were. Detectives are developing leads on who either left or placed the box of explosives in the apartment.
