The search for two men missing in Lake Michigan after high waves swept them from a pier in eastern Wisconsin is now considered a recovery effort. Keith Risse with the Sheboygan Fire Department says the men were fishing on South Pier on Sunday afternoon when they were washed from the pier. A third man who also was knocked into the water was rescued and taken to a hospital. U.S. Coast Guard used a helicopter and a Milwaukee rescue boat to search for the men. The Sheboygan County dive team suspended operations Sunday evening because of the rough water. Fire officials say the search resumed Monday morning. The pier in Sheboygan, 55 miles north of Milwaukee, is closed because of the dangerous conditions.

Southeastern Wisconsin is seeing a 6-inch rain deficit this year and has been classified as “abnormally dry.” During a normal year, southeastern Wisconsin already should have had 18 inches of rainfall. But this year, the total is only about 12 inches. The southeast part of Wisconsin was added to the federal drought monitor for the first time this year. Assistant state climatologist Ed Hopkins says the area has been slowly accruing a rain deficit this spring, continuing into summer. During the past week, southeastern Wisconsin has received between 5 percent and 25 percent of the typical amount of rain for this time of year.

Wildlife officials say a second herd of elk from Kentucky has been released in west-central Wisconsin. The Department of Natural Resources says 50 elk were released from a holding pen into the surrounding Jackson County forests. The second herd from Kentucky arrived in March as part of a five-year reintroduction program conducted by the DNR. Officials say 39 elk arrived at the Jackson County holding pen, but their numbers grew as pregnant cows gave birth this summer. The DNR released an inaugural herd in Jackson County last year. Wisconsin has had only one elk herd near Clam Lake in northern Wisconsin for two decades. Kevin Wallenfang of the DNR says the agency will now focus the next two to three years on adding animals to the northern herd.

Dane County Sheriff’s deputies say two people crashed their cars this past weekend while playing “Pokemon Go.” The sheriff’s office issued a press release Monday saying around 2:30 a.m. Saturday a 25-year-old Madison man crashed into a tree in the town of Verona. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and cited for drunken and inattentive driving. Around 6:30 a.m. that same day a 26-year-old Fitchburg man drove his car into a tree in the town of Verona. The car caught fire but the man was able to escape. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was also cited for drunken driving, not having insurance and driving left of center. Both drivers acknowledged they were playing “Pokemon Go.”
