Authorities in Waushara County arrest a man who is accused of shooting a rifle at people and leading officers from multiple jurisdictions on a manhunt. Sheriff Jeffrey Nett says deputies responded to a location in the Town of Wautoma around 8 a.m. Sunday morning for a report of a man who fired a rifle at two people and was walking around on land. A search of the area began. At 9:25 a.m. officers heard gun shots near County Highway MM and Bighorn Drive. Nett says fifteen minutes later, officers found the man in a field on 17th Avenue and took him into custody. Wautoma and Wild Rose police departments, the Wisconsin State Patrol and a Wisconsin DNR airplane assisted the Waushara County Sheriff’s Office in the search.

The Outagamie County Coroner’s Office releases the name of a man killed in a weekend crash in the Town of Maine. The victim was identified as Jeff Meyer, 39. An autopsy will be performed today at the Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to County Hwy. M, south of Hwy. F, at just after 6:00 a.m. Sunday. Authorities say the man was driving north on County Hwy. M and drove into the west ditch, where he lost control of this vehicle and it overturned. Meyer was ejected from the vehicle. Officials say his injuries caused his death. He was the only person in the vehicle. The crash is under investigation.

School officials say a weekend fire has caused $1 million in damage to an arts complex at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The fire was reported after 10 p.m. Saturday in the theater building of the Peck School of the Arts. Facilities Director Randall Trumbull Holper said in an email to students and faculty that all classes in the music, theater and art buildings were canceled Monday and also today. A university spokesman says the fire started in the backstage portion of the theater. Investigators are checking whether a faulty electrical panel might have been the cause. No one was hurt.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is proposing ending a beloved magazine put out by the state Department of Natural Resources highlighting Wisconsin’s natural splendor. The proposal to stop publishing “Wisconsin Natural Resources” after this year has angered its avid readership and has some Democrats and conservationists wondering if the pro-industry Republican governor wants to pull the plug because the publication promotes science. Walker argues that the state shouldn’t be in the publishing game and that the DNR could reach more people through social media. Many of the magazine’s readers are older and don’t get their news through the internet, though, and they say there’s no reason to get rid of the nearly century-old publication, which is sustained by subscriptions. It had nearly 84,000 subscribers as of December.
