The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation following a high speed chase that ended in Waupun. Twenty two year old Matthew Ellcey fled following a traffic stop on Highway 49 last week, dragging a sheriff’s Lieutenant for a short distance as he fled, and later crashed his vehicle in downtown Waupun and fled on foot. He was apprehended a couple hours later at a friend’s house. The officer received minor injuries. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says Ellcey is expected to face additional charges.

A man using a wheelchair has completed a 170-mile journey from southern Wisconsin to Lambeau Field. Fifty-five-year-old Dennis Schulze arrived Saturday at the Green Bay stadium, accompanied by a crowd of about 40 people including families and law enforcement. Instead of using a wheelchair, Schulze put on a prosthetic leg and walked the last mile to honor those who cannot walk. Schulze got to meet Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson and briefly stand on the famous field. Schulze started his trip from Janesville in February. The Beloit native lost his right leg five years ago in a truck crash. He now makes wheelchair travels for charity and says his journey to Lambeau is not the last of his travels.

A bipartisan group of 40 state lawmakers have introduced a bill that would prohibit former lawmakers from becoming lobbyists for at least a year after they leave office. Under the bill, violators would be subject to a fine of up to $5,000 and, in some cases, up to a year in prison. At least two Republican lawmakers have quickly transitioned to lobbying in recent years. In 2014, then-Sen. Joe Leibham resigned from his seat and registered as a lobbyist for several private companies less than weeks later. In 2013, former state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald registered as a lobbyist within a week of leaving office. Republican Sen. Duey Stroebel and Democrat Rep. Dana Wachs introduced the bill. Government watchdog organizations have long pushed for such a measure.

Voters in several dozen Wisconsin school districts will decide whether to give their districts more money when they weigh in on a total of 65 referendums April 4. Around 80 percent of school referendums have passed in the last year and voters have approved a record $1.35 billion in new borrowing. Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposal would boost funding for K-12 schools by $649 million over the next two years, but advocates say more is needed to avoid cutting staff or class offerings.

Wisconsin’s state budget could be more than $1 billion in the red by 2021, based on the proposal submitted by Gov. Scott Walker that the Legislature is considering. The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau released an updated analysis of the state budget for the two years after the period covered by Walker’s current budget proposal. It finds that the budget could face a nearly $1.1 billion shortfall for the Legislature to deal with two years from now. However, those figures do not take into account possible growth in state tax collections or additional expenses. The new estimate is up from a previous one from Walker’s administration that put the so-called structural deficit at around $740 million.
