    Wautoma Senior Center Community Fair
    October 2, 2021
The Waushara –Wautoma Senior Center in partnership with the Waushara Prevention Council/ subcommittee, Active Aging, will be hosting the annual Community Fair on October 2, 2021 from 10 a.m. – Noon. The fair will be used to highlight the many different social and community organizations we have to offer in Waushara County. The goal is to have as many age groups as possible represented and to be an all inclusive fair. Along with the organizations, we will also be offering flu/pneumonia shots and RX medication drop off. The flu shots are a big draw every year and we average over 100 people with just this. The tables for the organizations will be set up in the main bingo room with the flu shots in the card room and RX drop off in the rear of the building. With this set up, we feel the organizations that participate should have an excellent base for people to come by and visit their tables. We are asking that no sales be done at this fair. The organizations are encouraged to bring printed material and demonstrations are very welcome.
The Senior Center will provide the tables in the 58 x 48 ft. bingo hall. The Center has plenty of parking both in the front and rear. The space will be 4 ft x 3 ft (1/2 of a table)for a $10 cost or 8 ft. x 3ft. (full table) for a $20 cost. The space will be limited so please send in your application as soon as possible.
Waushara County has so many wonderful things to offer for those who live here and also for those who visit. The goal is to have all of Waushara County represented whether from Poy Sippi, Plainfield, Coloma, Redgranite, Pine River, Hancock, Wild Rose, or Wautoma.  We hope you will join us in this showcase of these great organizations at one convenient location.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the Senior Center Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. @ (920)787-2055.
    Sincerely,
    Waushara-Wautoma Senior Center

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale, October 14 – October 16

Ripon, WI – The Friends of the Ripon Public Library will hold its semi-annual used book sale from October 14 – October 16 in the basement of the library at 120 Jefferson Street.  Please note that properly worn face coverings are REQUIRED and the number of shoppers allowed in the sale rooms will be limited.  No children under the age of 8 allowed except by appointment.  Thousands of books have been donated recently and those in the Last Chance Room are priced at 25 and 50 cents as well as 10 cents for children’s books.  The Showroom contains many new displays, including antiques and collectibles, vintage adult and children’s books, vintage record albums, and country music.  Newly expanded sections include Civil War, WWII, and Vietnam war history, social justice, western and young adult fiction, and Christian and Amish fiction.  There is a large selection of audiobooks priced at 50 cents or 3/$1.  The collections of recipe books, art books, religious books, and children’s books are very large.  Cash and checks will be accepted as well as credit cards for purchases over $10.  The mission of the Friends is to promote and support public resources and community programs at the Ripon Public Library, and proceeds from the sale are used to support this mission.  In the past year the Friends have assisted with funding the new digital hoopla service, summer and winter reading programs for all ages, the Romper Room, and more.

Tuesday, October 12 and Wednesday, October 13: Open by appointment

A limited number of appointments are available for any shopper who prefers to have a low contact book sale visit.  Maximum of four people scheduled per time slot.  Book dealers are encouraged to shop during this time.  Contact the library for information.

    Thursday, October 14: Early Bird Sale from 4:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Get a leg up on the competition by attending the Friends of the Library used book Early Bird Sale!  The opening evening is always free for Friends of the Library members to attend, and for this sale the $3 entrance fee will be waived due to the pandemic though donations are appreciated.  The Early Bird Sale will let you browse and purchase any of the books available.  The sale will again be open free of charge on Friday and Saturday.

    Friday, October 15: Book Sale open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Open to anyone looking for a great deal on gently used books.  Come back tomorrow for even more deals!

    Saturday, October 16: Book Sale open 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The Friends of the Library semi-annual used book sale continues with a $3 grocery bag sale in the Last Chance Room – the Showroom is excluded from the bag sale.  This is your last chance to stock up until the next sale!  Because of the large volume of book donations received throughout the year, many of the books which don’t sell will be recycled after the sale and will not be here again.

For more information contact Desiree Bongers at 748-6160, or director@riponlibrary.org.

Horror Is Back at Nightmare in Fountain!
The time is nearly ripe for the re-emergence of Nightmare on First Street: Field of
Screams & Haunted Barn in Fountain, called by many “The Best Haunted Event
Ever!” After last year’s Covid hiatus, this scary and spooky non-profit fundraiser is
back and set to chill and thrill patrons for its tenth year.
Funds raised this year will benefit the Fillmore County History Center in Fountain,
MN, the best history center in a town of only 400 people, whose volunteers will be
among those helping to run Nightmare.
Each year Nightmare is different from the past, but this year it is being completely

every year go into the metamorphosis of this scary delight. Attendees can expect
creepy scenes, hand-carved pumpkins, labyrinthine routes, screams and moans,
surprises and scares, live actors, and maybe even an appearance by DEATH.
The theme this year is Haunted Mansion & Estate. You may discover a rabid butler,
murderous nanny, cleaver-wielding cook, ghostly servants, stairway to oblivion,
poisoned feast, overly-welcoming coffin, torturous dungeon, and so much more!!
Expanding to nine nights this year, Nightmare is created and hosted by Paul & Regan
Little of Fountain. Numerous others help with the presentation of the event.
Depending on how quickly you navigate through and affect your escape, expect
Nightmare to devour 20-45 minutes of your life for a scary entertainment experience
    (plus queue time before entering).

Dress for outside and unheated buildings.

Julia Meyers-Manor, Ripon College assistant professor of psychology, will give a free educational talk here at Town Square on Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. on her research on dog empathy and whether our best friends really do feel our pain.
Dogs have long been called man’s best friend, but now there’s scientific research behind it. Julia Meyers-Manor, Ripon College assistant professor of psychology, will give a free educational talk here at Town Square on Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. on her research on dog empathy and whether our best friends really do feel our pain. Professor Meyers-Manor’s research interests are in emotion and cognition in non-human animals. As a professional dog trainer, she has particular interests in understanding dog cognition as well as behavior problems. Her research shows that dogs respond with comfort to an individual who was crying whether that person was their owner or a complete stranger. “Dogs have been companions to humans for over 15,000 years, but how has that relationship influenced a dog’s ability to understand human emotions? Understanding empathy in dogs may help us in understanding the roots of human empathy and the consequences of using dogs as our emotional supports,” Meyers-Manor said.
