Appointments Available for Free Tax Filing AssistanceWith tax season just around the corner, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is once again gearing up to offer free tax assistance to Waushara County low- and moderate-income individuals and families.CAP’s trained and certified volunteers help prepare tax returns for individuals and families with income below 200% of the federal poverty level. Federal and State income tax return preparation is available at no cost.“We make sure our customers get high-quality, professional service,” said Connie Henn, CAP’s VITA Program Coordinator. “Our trained volunteers are equipped to identify tax credit and refund opportunities that put money back in the pockets of families who need it.”Taxpayers who utilized CAP’s program last year saved an average of more than $220 in filing fees. All told, households in Waushara County saved $52,000 in fees and received more than $322,000 in federal and state refunds.“CAP will file your return electronically directly with the IRS to ensure the speediest processing available. No one can issue a refund faster than the IRS, so beware lenders and tax return preparers who promise refund-related loans and services,” said Connie Henn. “We’re here to help, and we’re dedicated to helping as many community members as possible.”Low- to moderate-income individuals and families can call 1-800-660-5430 to determine eligibility and schedule an appointment to have their taxes prepared and e-filed for free.
