  • Wild Rose Community Band July 1 Concert to Kick Off Independence Day Week
    19:00 -22:00
    July 1, 2018

Wild Rose Community Band July 1 Concert to Kick Off Independence Day Week

The Wild Rose Community Band will hold its First Annual Mid-Summer Concert at 7:00 PM on Sunday evening, July 1, in the air-conditioned Wild Rose School Auditorium, Euclid Street, Wild Rose.  The event is titled “A Musical Birthday Party for our Nation.”  It will feature highlights from several movies and Broadway productions, including Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean, My Fair Lady, Camelot, and of course, The Music Man.  It will also feature lively marches and traditional tunes to honor our country’s Independence Day.  The concert is expected to last approximately an hour.

The concert will be the debut for the band’s newest director, Mr. Gregory Schaffer.  Mr. Schaffer’s career has including teaching, directing and administrative positions with the Brown Deer School System, as well as several years directing adult bands in the Milwaukee area, including the Milwaukee Concert Band and the Milwaukee American Legion Band.  Mr. John Jenks, Mrs. Mary Stepanek, and Mr. Tom Stepanek will also share the directing duties.

The band was founded in May of 2017, and performed last year at Wild Rose Days ‘Party on the Pond’, the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, and the Wild Rose Auditorium.  The April 7 concert was a big success, attracting an audience of over 120, and raising nearly $700 for the Wild Rose American Legion Post 370 Memorial Project.  The July concert will have no admission charge, though a free will collection will be taken to assist in offsetting the band’s ongoing expenses for rental of instruments and music.

The band’s roster currently includes over 50 musicians from all over the area, including the communities of Wautoma, Waupaca, Wild Rose, Poy Sippi, Pine River, Red Granite, Neshkoro, Weyauwega, and Westfield.  Current members range from teens to octogenarians and new members are always welcome.  Rehearsals are held in the Wild Rose Schools Band Room each Thursday evening, 6:30-8:00 PM (Door ‘J’, Euclid Ave.).  For more information about the band or about the July 1 concert, feel free to send an email to brownlowod@gmail.com, or call Chuck, 920-851-0271.

  • 17th Annual Back to School Bash
    11:47
    July 9, 2018

Planning is underway for the 17th annual Back to School Bash, coordinated by the Waushara County Department of Human Services. The Back to School Bash provides backpacks and school supplies for Waushara County children in need.
Paying school registration fees and purchasing required school supplies can be a financial hardship for many families. The start of the school year can be especially stressful for parents and students if they return to school without the expected school supplies and know their parents can’t afford them. The Back to School Bash depends on support of local business, civic groups and community members to ensure community children have the tools they need to learn. Last year, more than 300 children received backpacks of school supplies.
The committee is currently seeking donations of school supplies and backpacks. Donation totes have been placed throughout Waushara County. In Wautoma, totes are located at: St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Shopko, Hometown Bank, US Bank, Huntington Bank, BMO Bank, Waushara County Courthouse and the Wautoma Public Library.  In Wild Rose, totes are available at the Farmers State Bank, Centex Coop, United Methodist Church, United Presbyterian Church and the Patterson Memorial Library.  In Plainfield/Hancock/Coloma communities, totes are available at the Royal Supermarket, Portage County Bank, the Hancock Bank and the Coloma Library. In Redgranite, totes are available at the First Congregational Church, Hometown Bank, BR Diner and the Curve-In Café.
Monetary donations can also be made payable to Waushara County DHS-Back to School Bash and mailed to P.O. Box 1230 Wautoma, WI 54982.
The Back to School Bash will be held Saturday, August 11th in the basement demonstration room of the Waushara County Courthouse. School supplies will be distributed from 8-11am on a first-come first-serve basis. To offset program costs, $2.00 per backpack fee will be collected. Proof of Waushara County residency is required.
To learn more about Waushara County’s Back to School Bash or make a donation, contact Angie Konieczki at 920-787-6550 angie.konieczki@co.waushara.wi.us or Jan Novak at 920-787-6600 jan.novak@co.waushara.wi.us

The series typically takes place on Friday evenings, June through August, but occasionally bonus concerts are added or events rescheduled due to weather issues. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. NO CARRY-INs are allowed in the park because beverage sales help cover entertainment expenses. Free music isn’t really free.

A special Thank You goes out to the local businesses that sponsor the music series. Let them know you appreciate the financial commitment they have made to our community. We are grateful to have their support, because there would not be a concert series without their financial assistance.

Ripon Main Street, Inc. invites you to enjoy an evening of entertainment in historic downtown Ripon and discover what makes our community so special.

SYNC returns for another summer of free audiobook downloads

AudioFile Magazine is gearing up to give readers free audiobook downloads ALL summer long! SYNC has been offered since Summer 2010 and returns on April 26, 2018 as AudioFile Magazine’s commitment to introducing the listening experience to teens.

SYNC audiobook titles are given away in themed pairs. Each week, two different books (one modern Young Adult book and one classic book) will be available to download for FREE. You have just those 7 days to download the books before the next two books are available, but then they are yours to keep FOREVER. All you need to participate is an email address and OverDrive for your phone or computer.

New audiobooks post each Thursday, from April 26 through July 25, 2018. To see a SYNC schedule and to listen to a sample clip of the new books available each week head over to www.riponlibrary.org. Sign up for email or text alerts and be first to know when new titles are available to download at www.audiobooksync.com.

Organized by Ripon Main Street, Inc., the free outdoor concer series will begin on Thursday, May 31st with performances by the RMS and RHS Jazz Bands. The entertainment continues on Friday, June 1st with Wisconsin’s premier 80s rock cover band Cherry Pie.

The series features a diverse group of entertainers encompassing a wide range of musical styles. Several community favorites are returning to the lineup including Cherry Pie, Road Trip, Star Six Nine and Vic Ferrari. New groups including FBI & the Untouchable Horns, Incendio and Keith Anderson.
